In today’s digital world, spending hours at a desk is common across many professions. Whether you’re working from home or at an office, prolonged sitting, poor posture, and repetitive movements can lead to chronic pain, stiffness, and even reduced circulation. While regular stretching and movement are essential, many people are now turning to therapeutic cupping massage as a powerful complement to their wellness routine.

If you spend most of your day seated, here’s why cupping massage might be the solution your body has been waiting for.

What Is Therapeutic Cupping Massage?

Cupping is a form of therapy rooted in ancient Chinese and Middle Eastern medicine. During a therapeutic cupping massage, a practitioner places specially designed cups—usually made of silicone, glass, or plastic—on the skin to create a vacuum seal. This suction gently lifts the skin and superficial muscle layer, promoting circulation, loosening fascia, and encouraging the body’s natural healing processes.

At The Supine Studio, we use modern cupping techniques as part of a comprehensive approach to soft tissue care, tailoring each session to address the client’s specific tension and postural concerns.

How Desk Work Affects the Body

Sitting for long hours, especially without adequate ergonomic support, places repeated strain on several areas of the body:

Neck and shoulders often bear the brunt of craning toward a screen or phone.

Lower back muscles can become compressed or weak from prolonged sitting.

Hips and glutes may tighten and lose mobility.

Circulation slows in the lower extremities, which can cause fatigue and swelling.

Over time, this static posture can contribute to chronic discomfort, tension headaches, nerve impingement, and poor range of motion.

The Benefits of Therapeutic Cupping Massage for Desk Workers

Cupping provides unique benefits for individuals with sedentary lifestyles. Here’s how it can help:

1. Improves Circulation and Lymphatic Flow

The negative pressure created by cupping draws blood to the surface and stimulates the lymphatic system. This can help flush out stagnation and metabolic waste that build up in overused or tight muscles, promoting a feeling of renewed energy and lightness in areas that often feel heavy or fatigued from sitting.

2. Releases Muscle Tension

Unlike traditional massage that applies downward pressure, cupping gently lifts the fascia and underlying tissue. This decompression effect can provide deep relief for tension stored in the shoulders, traps, lower back, and hips—common problem areas for desk workers.

3. Reduces Pain and Enhances Mobility

Cupping has been shown to reduce pain levels associated with myofascial restrictions and trigger points. For those who experience discomfort after long workdays, regular therapeutic cupping massage sessions can improve flexibility and reduce the sensation of stiffness or tightness, making it easier to move without discomfort.

4. Supports Better Posture

By addressing imbalances caused by prolonged sitting, cupping can support better postural alignment. Releasing chronically tight areas makes it easier to engage underused muscles and adopt healthier body mechanics throughout the day.

5. Encourages Stress Relief

Massage therapy already offers mental and emotional benefits, and the soothing nature of cupping adds an extra layer of calm. Many clients find that therapeutic cupping massage not only reduces physical tension but also supports nervous system regulation—something we could all use during stressful workweeks.

What to Expect at The Supine Studio

At The Supine Studio, your session begins with a comprehensive intake to understand your work habits, posture, and areas of concern. We then incorporate cupping as part of your personalized massage treatment, targeting the regions most impacted by desk work. Whether you’re looking for occasional relief or want to make bodywork part of your monthly routine, we’re here to support your wellness goals.

Desk work might be unavoidable, but chronic discomfort doesn’t have to be. Therapeutic cupping massage offers a targeted, effective way to counteract the effects of prolonged sitting and restore balance to your body. If you’re ready to feel looser, lighter, and more aligned, book a session with one of the qualified practitioners at The Supine Studio and give your body the care it deserves.

Not all massages are created equal. Some are designed to soothe sore muscles after a long day, some dive deep to relieve chronic pain, and others are incredibly gentle—yet powerful—tools in healing after surgery or cancer treatment. Let’s break down three very different but equally important types of massage: Swedish Massage, Cupping Massage, and Lymphatic Drainage Massage (LMD).

Swedish Massage: The Classic Crowd-Pleaser

Swedish massage is probably what pops into your head when someone says “massage.” It’s the go-to option for relaxation, stress relief, and overall well-being. Using long, flowing strokes, kneading , and gentle tapping or vibration techniques, Swedish massage is all about calming your nervous system and getting your blood flowing.

Best for:

First-time massage clients

Reducing general stress and tension

Boosting circulation

Loosening tight muscles in a non-invasive way

Swedish massage is like your favorite cozy blanket—comforting, reliable, and great for self-care maintenance. You’ll leave feeling lighter, looser, and maybe a little floaty.

Cupping Massage: A Powerful Deep Tissue Therapeutic Tool

Cupping massage adds a bit of flair (and suction) to the table—literally. Using silicone or glass cups, this technique creates negative pressure to lift the skin and underlying tissue. While traditional deep tissue massage presses into the muscle, cupping pulls up on it, giving tight areas room to release.

Some therapists move the cups in a gliding motion (dynamic cupping), while others leave them in place (static cupping) for a few minutes. It’s often used by athletes and folks with chronic pain because of its ability to break up stubborn tension and promote faster recovery.

Best for:

Chronic muscle tension and tightness

Improving range of motion

People who like deep work but with less pressure

People with chronic muscle injuries like Frozen Shoulder, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Plantar Fasciitis.

Yes, it might leave those telltale round marks, but they fade, and the relief often speaks for itself. Fun fact: cupping massage is actually considered a form of deep tissue work because of how deeply it affects the muscle and fascia layers—just from a different angle.

Lymphatic Drainage Massage: Gentle Touch for Big Healing

Now for something completely different: Lymphatic Drainage Massage, often called Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD). This isn’t about deep pressure or muscle manipulation—this is a feather-light, highly specialized technique that targets your lymphatic system, the body’s waste management network.

Trained therapists use slow, rhythmic strokes and gentle pulsing movements to stimulate lymph flow, helping your body move excess fluid, reduce inflammation, and support immune function. But this isn’t your average spa massage—this technique is critical care for many people healing from surgery or undergoing cancer treatment.

Best for:

Oncology patients managing lymphedema or post-radiation swelling

Post-surgical recovery (especially after cosmetic or orthopedic procedures)

Reducing swelling, bruising, or scar tissue

Supporting the immune system during healing

In oncology care, LMD is often recommended after lymph node removal, radiation, or chemotherapy when the body’s natural lymph flow has been disrupted. For post-op clients, LMD helps reduce swelling, supports tissue repair, and can improve comfort during a physically vulnerable time.

Because LMD requires special training—especially for oncology or post-surgical work—it’s important to find a certified therapist who understands how to adapt their technique safely. And you’re in luck because Bailey is certified in LMD. You’re not looking for a “deep tissue” experience here. This is about supporting your body’s healing, not pushing into sore muscles.

So Which One Do You Need?

Each of these massage styles has its own superpower:

Swedish Massage is for relaxation and stress relief.

Cupping Massage is for deeper muscle and fascia release with a twist (or rather, a suction).

Lymphatic Drainage Massage is a gentle but powerful therapy for people recovering from surgery or cancer-related treatments.

Still unsure? Contact The Supine Studio and we will talk through your goals, your health history, and any sensitivities you have to help guide you to the right service.

The best massage is the one that meets your body where it’s at—whether that’s on the road to recovery or just trying to make it through a stressful week.

As the chilly grip of winter gives way to the refreshing warmth of spring, athletes and outdoor enthusiasts rejoice at the opportunity to get back to their favorite activities. From jogging to engaging in team sports like soccer or softball, springtime is synonymous with renewal and movement. However, this annual return to outdoor sports often comes with a familiar side effect: sore muscles and unexpected body aches. That’s where the soothing power of a good massage steps in to save the day.

The Call of the Outdoors

After months of limited activity or gym-centric routines, many individuals dive headfirst into spring sports with boundless enthusiasm. The allure of fresh air, longer days, and the vibrant greenery is irresistible. Whether it’s your first tennis match in months, a pickup basketball game, or a refreshing hike, the body is suddenly tasked with movements and exertion it may not have experienced during the winter.

While the benefits of outdoor activity are immense—improved cardiovascular health, mood elevation, and enhanced social interactions—the sudden shift in intensity can take a toll. Running on uneven terrain, swinging a racket, or kicking a soccer ball engages different muscle groups and joints than indoor exercises or winter activities. The result? Stiffness, tightness, and sometimes outright pain.

Why Spring Sports Cause Soreness

The human body thrives on movement, but it also requires gradual conditioning. The abrupt transition from winter hibernation to spring sports can overwhelm muscles and connective tissues. Here are some reasons why soreness and discomfort are common:

Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS): After a long period of inactivity or a change in activity type, microtears in muscle fibers cause inflammation and soreness.

Different Biomechanics: Outdoor sports often involve running on uneven ground, sudden directional changes, or prolonged exertion, leading to strain on muscles and ligaments.

Overexertion: The excitement of being outdoors again can push people to overdo it, ignoring their bodies’ limits.

Weather and Environment: Cooler spring mornings or unexpected temperature drops can cause muscles to tighten, increasing the risk of injury.

Enter the Magic of Massage

Massage therapy is one of the most effective ways to counteract the physical toll of spring sports. A massage is not just a luxurious treat; it’s a practical, science-backed recovery method that can help your body heal, relax, and prepare for more activity.

Here’s how massage can help:

Eases Muscle Tension: Massage techniques such as kneading and stroking help release built-up tension in overworked muscles, reducing stiffness and discomfort.

Promotes Circulation: Increased blood flow delivers oxygen and nutrients to fatigued muscles while flushing out metabolic waste like lactic acid, which contributes to soreness.

Enhances Flexibility: Regular massages improve muscle pliability and joint mobility, reducing the risk of future injuries.

Alleviates Stress: Beyond physical benefits, massage helps lower cortisol levels and increases serotonin and dopamine, aiding mental relaxation and focus.

Speeds Recovery: Massage therapy supports the repair process by reducing inflammation and stimulating lymphatic drainage, which helps remove toxins.

Types of Massage Perfect for Spring Athletes

Different types of massage cater to specific needs, making it easy to find a treatment that suits your post-sports recovery:

Swedish Massage: Ideal for relaxation and general muscle soreness, this technique uses long, flowing strokes to soothe and revitalize.

Deep Tissue Massage: Perfect for addressing deeply rooted tension and muscle knots caused by intense activities like running or weightlifting.

Sports Massage: Tailored to athletes, this approach combines techniques to prepare the body for sports, prevent injuries, and accelerate recovery.

Myofascial Release: Focuses on relieving tightness in the connective tissues surrounding muscles, ideal for those experiencing mobility restrictions.

Trigger Point Therapy: Targets specific “knots” in muscles, providing relief from localized pain and improving overall function.

Incorporating Massage Into Your Spring Routine

Making massage a regular part of your springtime sports routine can elevate your performance and enjoyment of outdoor activities. Here’s how to make it work for you:

Schedule Regular Sessions: Depending on your activity level, a weekly or biweekly massage can help maintain optimal muscle health.

Warm Up Before Activity: Combine massages with proper warm-ups and stretches to prepare your muscles for exertion.

Listen to Your Body: If you feel persistent soreness or notice specific areas of tension, a targeted massage can address those issues before they worsen.

Combine With Self-Care: Complement massage therapy with hydration, adequate sleep, and a balanced diet to support overall recovery.

Beyond Recovery: A Path to Better Performance

Massage is not just for recovery; it’s also a tool for enhancing performance. By keeping muscles flexible, reducing stress, and improving circulation, athletes often find they can push themselves further with less risk of injury. Additionally, the mental clarity and relaxation gained from massage can boost focus and confidence during games or workouts.

The Supine Studio: Your Partner in Recovery

The Supine Studio offers massage services specifically designed to help you recover and find pain relief after getting back into exercise. Our services include the Hybrid Technique, Signature Session, and Myofascial Release, all tailored to address the unique challenges that come with returning to physical activity. Whether you’re dealing with lingering soreness or simply want to keep your body in peak condition, The Supine Studio provides expert care to support your journey.

The Joy of Pain-Free Movement

Spring sports offer a rejuvenating way to reconnect with nature and embrace physical activity. Yet, the aches and pains that sometimes follow don’t have to dampen your enthusiasm. By integrating massage into your routine, you can enjoy the season to its fullest, moving with greater ease and less discomfort.

So, as you lace up your running shoes or grab your gear for that first outdoor game, remember to treat your body to the recovery it deserves. A skilled massage might just be the secret weapon that keeps you in the game, all season long.

These conditions are often caused by repetitive motions, which can lead to inflammation, pain, and reduced range of motion. Can Cupping Massage help Frozen Shoulder and Carpal Tunnel? Read on to find out.

Frozen Shoulder

Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition that affects the shoulder joint, causing stiffness, pain, and limited mobility. It typically develops over time and is often caused by repetitive motions or overuse. Frozen shoulder can also occur after an injury or surgery.

Massage therapy can be beneficial for people with frozen shoulder by increasing blood flow and reducing inflammation in the affected area. Massage can also help break up adhesions or scar tissue that may be contributing to the stiffness and limited mobility. Specific techniques, such as deep tissue massage, can target the affected muscles and tissues to promote healing and improve range of motion.

One study published in the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy found that massage therapy, combined with stretching and exercise, was effective in reducing pain and improving range of motion in people with frozen shoulder. The study also found that massage therapy helped improve sleep and overall quality of life for participants.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that affects the wrist and hand, causing pain, numbness, and tingling. It is caused by compression of the median nerve, which runs through the wrist and into the hand. Repetitive motions, such as typing on a computer or using a mouse, can contribute to the development of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Massage therapy can help alleviate symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome by reducing inflammation and increasing blood flow to the affected area. Massage can also help loosen tight muscles and tissues that may be contributing to the compression of the median nerve. Specific techniques, such as trigger point therapy, can target the affected muscles and provide relief.

One study published in the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy found that massage therapy was effective in reducing pain and improving grip strength in people with carpal tunnel syndrome. The study also found that massage therapy helped improve overall hand function and quality of life for participants.

Cupping Massage

Cupping massage is a form of massage therapy that uses suction cups to lift and separate muscles and tissues. This technique can help increase blood flow, reduce inflammation, and promote healing. Cupping massage can be especially beneficial for people with frozen shoulder and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Cupping massage can help alleviate symptoms of frozen shoulder by increasing blood flow to the affected area and promoting healing of the tissues. The suction cups can help break up scar tissue and adhesions, which can improve range of motion and reduce stiffness. Cupping massage can also help reduce inflammation and pain in the affected area.

Similarly, cupping massage can help alleviate symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome by increasing blood flow and reducing inflammation in the affected area. The suction cups can help loosen tight muscles and tissues, which can reduce compression of the median nerve. Cupping massage can also help alleviate pain and improve overall hand function.

Massage therapy is a highly effective and holistic approach to treating frozen shoulder and carpal tunnel syndrome, both of which can be caused by repetitive motions and overuse. By increasing blood flow, reducing inflammation, and promoting healing of the affected tissues, massage therapy can help alleviate pain, improve range of motion, and enhance overall quality of life. If you are experiencing symptoms of frozen shoulder or carpal tunnel syndrome, consider booking a massage therapy session with a qualified practitioner to experience the benefits for yourself.
Cupping massage is an ancient form of alternative medicine that has been used for centuries to treat a variety of medical conditions. This type of massage therapy uses cups to create a vacuum on the skin. This suction can help improve blood circulation and relieve pain. Cupping massage is often used to treat conditions such as back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and frozen shoulder.

How do I know if cupping massage is right for me?

If you are suffering from any of the following conditions, cupping massage may be a good treatment option for you:

– Low back pain

– Carpal tunnel syndrome

– Muscle aches and pains

– Plantar Fasciitis

If you are interested in trying cupping massage, it is important to consult with a licensed professional as there are SOME contraindications that would prevent you from receiving cupping massage.

Some contraindications for cupping massage include:

liver or kidney disorder

blood clotting disorder

are at risk of heart attack or stroke

have had Covid in the past several months

Who needs Cupping Massage?

Almost everyone can benefit from cupping massage. Do you work at a desk all day and suffer from low back pain? Are you looking down at a smart device and have chronic neck pain? Are you a weekend warrior and over do it a few times a month?

You get the point.

It’s common to use a combination of gliding cupping and stagnant cupping (where we leave the cups on for 10-15 minutes) to get the most benefit. Sometimes, we might stretch your body while certain cups are in place.

If you have any questions about cupping and want to see if it’s right for you, please reach out!

Sciatica is a condition that results from compression of the sciatic nerve. This nerve runs from the lower back, through the buttocks, and down the legs. Sciatica can cause low back pain, as well as pain in the legs, hips, and feet. The pain is often described as a sharp, shooting sensation.

Sciatica can effect your daily life in many ways. The pain can make it difficult to stand up or sit down. It can also make it hard to walk or climb stairs. In severe cases, the pain can be so intense that it makes it impossible to sleep.

General low back pain , on the other hand, is not caused by a specific injury or condition. It is more common and can be brought on by things like poor posture, muscle strains, or herniated discs. The pain is often described as a dull ache that radiates through the lower back.

Like sciatica, low back pain can make your daily movements difficult. You may have trouble bending down or standing up. The pain can also make it hard to walk or climb stairs.

There are several treatment options for low back pain as well.

You can alternate between heat and ice therapy to reduce the pain. Heat therapy increases blood flow to the area, which helps to reduce inflammation. Ice therapy numbs the area and can help to reduce swelling.

There are several treatment options for sciatica and low back pain.

Cupping massage can help with sciatica by breaking up the muscle “knots” that are causing the pain. This type of massage uses suction cups that are placed on the skin. The suction pulls the skin and underlying tissue away from the muscle, which helps to release the tension.

Cupping massage for sciatica and low back pain will be similar, but the cups will be placed somewhat differently to target the specific pain.

Stretching can also help with this condition because they lengthen and stretch the muscles, which can in turn help to reduce the pain.

It may be tempting to just lie down because it hurts, but this can actually make the pain worse. It is important to keep moving, even if it is just a little bit.

Plantar fasciitis is a condition that affects the plantar fascia, a band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot. This band of tissue supports your arch and helps absorb shock as you walk. When it becomes inflamed, it can cause heel pain.

What are some ways to help end the pain of plantar fasciitis?

Stretching your calves is imperative. Calf stretching targets the gastrocnemius. As your pain starts to decrease you can start doing deeper stretches.

You can also stretch the plantar fascia itself by sitting and rolling your foot over a foam roller. Then, gently pull your toes back and ease into a stretch.

Exercise

Heel Raises: With this exercise, you stand on a stair with your feet on the edge and slowly lower your heels just below the edge of the step. Then, raise your heels as high as possible before lowering them back down.

Seated Towel Scrunches: While seated, place a towel around the ball of your foot and pull it toward you while keeping your toes on the floor. You should feel a stretch in your arch.

Massage

One of the best things you can do to ease heel pain is getting a massage. Massage therapy increases blood flow and helps to break up any scar tissue that has formed. It’s possible a plantar fasciitis massage might include cupping on your calf, the tibialis (the muscle on the front that goes along your tibia), and even on the plantar fascia itself. In fact, clients you choose cupping massage tend to feel better in a shorter amount of time

Frozen shoulder can be one of the most painful conditions to live with. It causes stiffness and pain in your arm, making it difficult for you to go about everyday tasks without any relief at all! Massage therapy has been found as being a great way not only to relieve symptoms but also to help heal Frozen Shoulder so that you may enjoy your lives again.

Before we get into the ways massage can help frozen shoulder, let’s go over some anatomy. Frozen shoulder is almost always caused by inflammation of the shoulder joint’s connective tissues. These tissues are called the rotator cuff and the bursa. The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that attach the shoulder blade to the humerus. (That’s the upper arm bone.)

The muscles of the rotator cuff are:

Supraspinatus muscle (partly responsible for rotating arms outward when throwing)

Infraspinatus (which helps bring things inward)

Teres minor (acts as an anchor point between your shoulder blades)

What does the rotator cuff do?

Your rotator cuff lifts your arm up. If it’s injured, you might find yourself struggling to move or twist your shoulder joint fully back into its socket joints – this can make moving difficult as well painful!

What are the symptoms of Frozen Shoulder?

The symptoms of frozen shoulder include:

– pain in the shoulder, arm, neck, or back

– stiffness in the shoulder

– difficulty moving the shoulder

– a clicking or grinding sound when you move your shoulder

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, please see your doctor. They can diagnose frozen shoulder and rule out anything else it could be; they’ll also want to make sure the muscles aren’t torn so there is no need for surgery!

How do you treat Frozen Shoulder?

The good news is that frozen shoulder usually goes away on its own. However, the bad news is, it can take a long time- up to two years!

During this time, your doctor may recommend physical therapy or steroid injections to help with the pain.

Massage therapy is another great way to help relieve pain. The right massage therapist can increase your range of motion dramatically even with just one session. You won’t be “fixed” in one session, but you’ll be able to move a lot better. A properly trained massage therapist can cut that 2-year time frame to a much more tolerable and faster time frame.

In our office, we’ll evaluate you, and talk to you about a plan. Your treatment plan might include deep tissue massage, cupping massage, and stretching.

You’ll know your frozen shoulder is getting better when:

– you have less pain

– you have more range of motion in your shoulder

– you don’t hear clicking or grinding when you move your shoulder

If you are suffering from frozen shoulder, don’t despair. There is hope! The Supine Studio can help.
